Tips for Succeeding at a Job Fair
1. Take a resume class before the fair - Have a targeted and general resume ready to hand out
2. Research attending companies before the event - Find information on locations, positions, the companies' ethics and values, benefits, etc.
3. Fill out application forms online - Some companies require you to apply online before they will accept a resume. Check their websites for their policy and fill out forms prior to the event.
4. Prepare a portfolio - Ensure you have plenty of copies of resumes, reference sheets, research, education and training certificates, and simple business cards with your full contact information.
5. Practice introducting yourself - A firm handshake, simle and eye contact will make your first impression more memorable.
6. Be prepared for an interview - Dress in interview-appropriate clothing and be ready to respond well to questions.
7. Leave children, family and friends at home - Treat your time at the career fair like an interview and keep contact professional.
8. Refrain from collecting items from the tables - You're there to get a job, not pick up marketing materials.
9. Have a plan - Arrive at the opening time, bring water and snacks, talk to your most important companies first and pick up business cards
10. Follow-up with recruiters - A thank you note, phone call or e-mail is invaluable. Decide which is appropriate for each circumstance.
